***Corrected for a grammatical error. SMOKE: Pacific Northwest/Central CONUS/Great Lakes/Northeastern CONUS/Eastern Canada/Southern Prairie Provinces... A very large mass of thin density smoke ranged from northern Washington and southern British Columbia eastward across southern portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as Idaho and Montana and the Dakotas. The smoke then extends southward into northern Mexico and further eastward into eastern Ontario and western Quebec. The mass then extends clockwise around a ridge over eastern Quebec down into the Maritime Provinces and just along and off the Northeastern CONUS and Mid-Atlantic coastlines. From here, the smoke is then seen wrapping around a cyclone south of Newfoundland into the central Atlantic Ocean. The most dense smoke was observed over the Great Plains and Great Lakes. The source for much of this smoke was the ongoing wildfire activity occurring over central and northern Idaho, western Montana, far northern Washington, far southern British Columbia and portions of central Canada. Western Oregon/Northern California/Pacific Ocean... Wildfires throughout western Oregon, northern California, and the Pier fire in the southern Sierras are contributing to a thin to moderately dense smoke plume over northern California, western Oregon, and the near-coast Pacific Ocean. In close proximity to the individual wildfires, moderate to thick smoke emission was seen. DUST: Central Atlantic... Saharan dust was present north and northeast of the Windward Islands and to the east of Hurricane Jose. Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
