DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z September 8, 2018.

SMOKE:
Western and North Central U.S./Southwestern and South-Central Canada...
Wildfires burning over portions of northern California, Oregon, Idaho,
western Montana, and Washington were responsible for a large mass of
varying density smoke extending from northern California and the Pacific
Northwest eastward to the North Central U.S.. A thin filament of heavy
density smoke emanating from the Hirz Fire in northern California extends
towards the northeast and into western Montana before combining with
light density smoke from nearby wildfires. A large area of thin density
smoke was also visible over south-central Canada this morning.

North-Central Canada...
A large area of remnant smoke was visible over southern Nunavut and most
of Hudson Bay. This smoke is likely left over long range transport of
smoke from wildfire activity in Asia with the possibility of some smoke
originating from wildfires in western Canada and the Northwestern U.S.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
