DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z December 20, 2018.

SMOKE:
Southern Florida:
Earlier today...several plumes of light smoke from agricultural fires were
seen late morning/early afternoon in southern Florida, primarily south
of Lake Okeechobee. This smoke was seen moving generally northwest. This
afternoon...high cloud cover moved in across southern Florida making
analysis of smoke difficult. although nothing is analyzed for the later
afternoon, there is certainly some smoke moving across the Florida
Peninsula.

South Texas...
Across southern Texas, many prescribed burns were observed this
afternoon. The smoke from these burns was moving east across Brownsville
and into the far western Gulf of Mexico.

BLOWING DUST:
Eastern New Mexico/Western Texas Panhandle...
Blowing dust was observed streaming southeastward from the Laguna del
Perro dried lake bed in central New Mexico. The blowing dust extended
about 350 km southwest to the NM/TX border. This blowing dust has very
likely already crossed into the western Texas Panhandle.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
