DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z June 3, 2019
SMOKE: South Central Canada/Midwest/Great Lakes/Tennessee and Ohio River Valley/Southeastern US/Mid-Atlantic Regions/Atlantic A large quantity of smoke from large complex fires up in Northern Alberta Province that have been burning in Northwestern Canada the past few weeks has moved South and East with the upper level flow down into South Central Canada, the Upper and Lower Midwest, the Tennessee and Ohio River Valley, the Mid-Atlantic, the Southeastern US extending Southward over Northern Florida, and out over the Western Atlantic. A strong cold frontal passage and low pressure system helped to move the smoke south and east over the day. Light density smoke is present in most of these regions. Moderate density smoke has been observed over most of the Upper/Lower Midwest by the Great Lakes, also into portions of the Ohio River Valley, into Southern Virginia, into the North and South Carolina, and out over the Western Atlantic by the Outer Banks. Heavy density smoke using the latest GOES16 Visible Imagery has been observed over the Great Lakes region over Northeastern Minnesota, Eastern Wisconsin, Northeastern Illinois, Southwestern/Upper Part of Michigan, into most of Indiana/Kentucky, and into Southwestern West Virginia and Virginia. The smoke is progressing South and East this evening. Southwestern Mexico/ Northwestern Mexico/Pacific Fire activity over Southwestern/Northwestern Mexico has increased with diurnal heating and favorable fire conditions over the day in the region. Light density smoke has been observed over most of Southwestern/Northwestern Mexico. Light density smoke from fire activity was also observed out over the Eastern Pacific. Moderate density smoke was observed closer to the fire activity in Northwestern/Southwestern Mexico. Heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity of the fires in Northwestern/Southwestern the Mexico. The smoke is slowly progressing North and East this evening. Arizona/Florida Small fires burning in Arizona/Northern Florida and Oregon are continuing to emit smoke. The smoke with Arizona fires is progressing North and East, with Oregon fires is progressing South and then Northeast, and with North Florida fire the smoke is progressing east this evening. Eastern North Dakota and Western Minnesota A large amount of agricultural burning has been observed over Eastern North Dakota and Western Minnesota. The smoke from these fires is progressing North and East this evening. Sambucci THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
