DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z December 21, 2019

SMOKE:
Southeast US... Southern Georgia/Northwestern Florida/Southern South
Carolina...
GOES16 Visible imagery this evening observed light density smoke from
small fire activity with most of the fires located in Southern Georgia and
several other fires located in Southern South Carolina and Northwestern
Florida. Smoke is progressing Southwestward ahead of a weather system
this evening.

Central/ Southern Plains... Southern Kansas/Northern Texas...
Small agricultural burning/small fire activity was observed in the
Southern and Central Plains. Light to moderate density smoke from a fire
in Northern Texas is progressing Southward while light density smoke
from a fire in Southern Kansas is progressing Northeastward this evening.

Western US...California/Oregon...
Small fire activity was observed in Oregon and California however smoke
analysis was difficult due to a weather system moving into the region.

Mexico/Southern Guatemala...
Smoke from fire activity in Northwestern Mexico was observed with moderate
to heavy density smoke closer to the fires and light density smoke further
from the fires. The smoke from fire activity in Northwestern Mexico is
progressing Southward this evening. Light density smoke was also observed
from isolated small fire activity in Southern Mexico and scattered small
fire activity in Southern Guatemala. The smoke from these fires in mainly
progressing Southward towards the Pacific Ocean this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
