DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z April 4, 2020
SMOKE: Southeastern U.S... Scattered mainly thin density smoke plumes were visible with seasonal fire activity over the Southeastern U.S. from Alabama eastward across Georgia, South Carolina, and southern North Carolina. Some of the smoke plumes eventually merged forming larger areas of remnant thin density smoke especially across eastern South Carolina and offshore. Southern Texas/Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America/Cuba... Widespread seasonal fires were detected especially over portions of southern and southeastern Mexico and Central America which resulted in an extensive coverage of thinner density smoke impacting that region as well as the Bay of Campeche, the southern and western portion of the Gulf of Mexico, and southern Texas. More localized thicker smoke was visible especially from fires in the Yucatan Peninsula and portions of Central America. Farther to the east, more significant seasonal burning produced widespread coverage of thinner density smoke over central and western Cuba and the nearby offshore waters to the north and south of the island. DUST: Western U.S... A broad area of aerosol which may be long range dust transport from Asia could be seen just prior to sunset spreading eastward and inland over much of California, western and northwestern Nevada, and southwestern Oregon. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
