DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z November 2, 2020
SMOKE: California/Far Eastern Pacific off the California Coast… New smoke of moderate to thick density appeared to move more to the north and northwest from the Creek Fire, the Rattlesnake Fire, and the SQF Complex in the forests of east central California. Earlier smoke of mainly thin density primarily from these fires could be seen over portions of northern and central California and off the coast of California over the far eastern Pacific. Louisiana… Seasonal/agricultural fire over central and southern Louisiana produced many smoke plumes of thin density which spread to the south with some plumes merging to form slightly larger leftover patches of thin density smoke. UNKNOWN AEROSOL: Southern Arizona/Western Mexico/Baja/Gulf of California/Eastern Pacific off the Baja and Western Mexico Coast… A rather large area of unknown aerosol was visible along and off the western portion of Mexico and covering much of the Gulf of California and the southern half of the Baja Peninsula. Some of this aerosol also appeared to spread northward into southern Arizona just prior to sunset. The source and composition of this aerosol is not known, but it is possible that it may be composed at least in part of leftover smoke from the ongoing wildfires in east central California. JS Earlier This Morning... Saharan Dust: West Africa/Eastern Atlantic Ocean... A region of light to moderate density Saharan dust was observed in this morning’s GOES Visible satellite imagery off the West African coast over parts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. Sambucci THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
