DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z July 7, 2022
SMOKE: Alaska/Northern and Western Canada... An expansive area of varying density smoke was produced from intensive wildfires across Alaska, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territory. The smoke was observed extending from Alaska through Nunavut and the Northwest Territory. Some of this smoke was being drawn south across northwestern Saskatchewan, northern Alberta, and northern British Columbia before re-entering Alaska through the parts of Yukon. A large mass of denser smoke ranging from moderate to heavy was more concentrated throughout the Northwest Territory and western Nunavut followed by patches of heavy density smoke closer to the source of the wildfires. One stream of thicker smoke was also being drawn east-southeast across extreme northeastern Manitoba while the light and moderate dense smoke extending pass through Manitoba and Hudson Bay and into minor parts of western Quebec before cloud cover came over the region. Western Atlantic Ocean... Remnant smoke from the wildfires in Canada and Alaska was observed over in the Western Atlantic ocean moving south just off the coast of the southeast U.S, with the smoke extending from Virginia to Florida in size. Western Gulf of Mexico... Smoke was observed along the western Gulf of Mexico with fire activity most likely from seasonal burning within Mexico. BLOWING DUST: Tropical Atlantic… A large area of Saharan Dust was observed moving slowly westward across the Atlantic Ocean and across parts of the eastern Caribbean. Nguyen THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
