DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z November 4, 2022

SMOKE:
Southeastern CONUS…
A few fires across the southeastern CONUS were observed producing light
smoke this morning. Smoke was moving clockwise around high pressure
centered over the southern Appalachians.

South Florida…
Agricultural burning south of Lake Okeechobee was producing a couple
small, light puffs of smoke that ware moving west-southwest, with one
or two reaching the Gulf Coast.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Mexico, Tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean, Western Gulf of Mexico...
A large area of unknown aerosol probably combining with smoke from
localized fires in southern Mexico was seen in the western Gulf of Mexico
and extending to the southwest over the Tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean
off the southwest coast of Mexico. Another area of aerosol/smoke mixture
was present across south Texas, far northeastern Mexico, and northwestern
Gulf of Mexico.

DUST:
Eastern Atlantic…
Saharan Dust was observed extending west-southwestward from the Moroccan
Coast across the Canary Islands. The dust then turns north-northwestward
towards the Azores. Then, before reaching the Azores, the dust turns
south-southwestward, reaching the tropical Atlantic. From there, the
dust turns westward toward the eastern Caribbean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
