DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0110Z June 8, 2023
SMOKE: Canada, Central and Eastern United States… Major wildfires continue to burn across northeastern British Columbia, central and northern Alberta,, central Saskatchewan, Ontario, and southwestern Quebec, releasing heavy smoke across those areas and extending over the U.S. Midwest and mid-Atlantic states, and further over the northwestern Atlantic. Very high smoke concentrations were observed over Pennsylvania, southern New York, and New Jersey. Additional areas of high smoke concentration were found this afternoon across Michigan, central Ohio, Indiana and central-northern Illinois, and Wisconsin. Further south an area of medium density smoke was also seen across central Arkansas, northern Mississippi, and northwestern Alabama where. Lighter smoke was seen covering the entirety of Canada with exception of western British Columbia, and all of the U.S east of the Rockies. SMOKE/AEROSOL: Gulf of Mexico, Western Caribbean Sea, Mexico, Northwestern Central America and the Pacific Ocean south of southwest Mexico and Central America… A large area of low density smoke from ongoing fire activity over Mexico and Central America, mixed with aerosols from industrial activity over Mexico and Central America, covered the entire Gulf of Mexico, western Caribbean Sea, southern Mexico, northwest Central America and into the Pacific Ocean south and southwest of northwest Central America and southwest Mexico. A pocket of medium density smoke was also visible across the Bay of Campeche and adjacent inland areas. WS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
