DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z July 15, 2023
SMOKE: Canada, Northern United States, Northwestern Atlantic Ocean, Northeastern Pacific Ocean... Smoke, predominantly from wildfires in western and northwestern Canada with additional contributions from fires in Quebec, covered much of Canada from the Arctic Ocean southward. The smoke also extended into the northern third of the contiguous United States. The heaviest smoke was observed stretching from the Yukon and Northwest Territories east-southeastward to the western Great Lakes, with additional dense smoke across much of Quebec and the Hudson Bay. Stretches of light to moderate density smoke extended eastward over the Atlantic Ocean and southern Greenland, and westward over the Gulf of Alaska. Mexico, Southwestern United States... Light smoke, a mix of remnant smoke from the Canadian fires and seasonal burning mixed with aerosols in Mexico, was observed over much of Mexico, as well as the southern U.S. from the Mississippi River to southern California. Smoke from additional fires was also observed in northern Arizona and in California. However, smoke from these fires was generally localized to each parent fire. DUST: Caribbean Region and the Western Atlantic Ocean... Saharan Dust continued to be seen stretching across the Tropical Atlantic Ocean through the eastern Caribbean Islands and into the eastern Caribbean Sea and north of the Caribbean Islands. Moderate Saharan Dust was visible moving east across the Tropical Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Western Africa. MTC THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
