DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 8, 2023

SMOKE:
Canada/U.S./Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic Ocean off the U.S. and Canada
East Coast/Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico...
The numerous large wildfires continue to burn especially in portions
of British Columbia, northern Alberta, and the southern part of the
Northwest Territories this morning. This has been the case for weeks now
and the resulting mass of smoke mainly attributed to these fires covers
virtually all of Canada, the eastern two-thirds of the U.S., much of the
Gulf of Mexico, and Mexico. In addition, the smoke had spread far off
the east coast of Canada and the U.S. over the Atlantic nearly reaching
Europe. Embedded thicker areas of smoke, within the larger surrounding
coverage of thin density smoke, were visible over some of western and
northern Canada though cloudiness in this region did interfere with
the detection of some of the wildfires and smoke through satellite
imagery. Another batch of moderate to thick density smoke was visible
over south central Canada and extending southward into the Northern and
Central Plains of the U.S. Other patches of moderate density smoke were
over the Labrador Sea, off the coast of the northeastern U.S., and well
out over the open Atlantic to the southeast of Greenland.

DUST:
Atlantic Ocean…
The majority of Saharan dust continued to be generally confined to the
open Atlantic east of the Caribbean region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
