DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 10100Z September 26, 2023
SMOKE: Canada, Great Lakes, New England, Mississippi Valley... Wildfire activity persisted across northeastern British Columbia, northern Alberta, and central Saskatchewan this morning. Moderate-to-heavy density smoke could be observed near the sources, spreading across northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, and southeastern Northwest Territories. Another very large plume consisting of thick smoke from the major wildfire activity seen on Saturday (Sep 23) across the same areas above was also seen stretching eastward from eastern Ontario, passing over southern Hudson Bay, central Quebec, Newfoundland, the northwestern Atlantic, and finally reaching southern Greenland. Another plume segment of light-to-moderate concentration was visible between southeastern Ontario and New England, extending further to the east for approximately 1,000 over the Atlantic ocean. Light smoke from those wildfires also covered most of central and eastern Canada, extending southward over the Great Lakes, and connecting to some remnant smoke along the middle Mississippi Valley. Mexico... A light-density plume likely associated with a mix of fire emissions and urban aerosols covered most of the western Mexican coastline, extending over the Pacific ocean. NGUYEN THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
