DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z October 10, 2023

SMOKE:
Western Canada…
Ongoing active wildfire activity across northern Alberta continues to
produce light and moderate to perhaps heavy smoke. The smoke is moving
off toward the north-northwest into southern Northwest Territory where
an upper jet starts dragging the smoke eastward.

Hudson Bay to the Upper Midwest…
A thin ribbon of smoke was seen extending from the Canadian Archipelago
counter-clockwise around a storm system over Ontario and Quebec over
Manitoba, far western Ontario, and into Minnesota and the Dakotas.

Mississippi Valley/Southeastern CONUS…
Widespread agricultural burning from the Missouri Bootheel into
Louisiana, along with more scattered agricultural burning from central
Kansas to the Carolinas, was observed producing mainly light smoke with
a couple producing moderate density smoke. Smoke was generally moving
counter-clockwise around the same, sprawling system over eastern Canada,
with smoke along the Gulf Coast moving northeastward.

Pacific Northwest…
Fire activity across western Montana and Idaho was producing light to
moderate density smoke. The smoke was moving generally northeastward.

Black Hills…
A wildfire was observed producing thick smoke on the southwestern edge
of the Black Hills. The smoke was moving mainly east-southeastward with
a portion moving east-northeastward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
