DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0219Z October 27, 2023

SMOKE:
Western Gulf Coast region to Tennessee and Kentucky…
An area of light density smoke, from fires over the Southeastern and
South Central United States, was seen extending from portions of Virginia,
North Carolina, northeast along the coastal regions of Maryland, Delaware
and along southern locations of New England and southeastern Canada and
offshore into the northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Northern California...
A wildfire in northern California could be seen producing mostly moderate
to dense smoke which moved to the south as evening approached.

Central Texas/Northern Mexico…
Scattered wildfires and seasonal burning activity from Texas were observed
producing an area of light density smoke over Central Texas/Northern
Mexico.

Mississippi Valley Southeastern U.S...
An area of light density smoke, from fires over the Southeastern and South
Central United States, was seen briefly earlier today extending from
portions of Louisiana through the northern region of the Mississippi
valley and into Tennessee and Kentucky. Heavy cloud cover over the
eastern U.S made it difficult to determine the full extent of the smoke
in these regions.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
