DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0035Z May 7, 2024

SMOKE:
Southern Florida…
A large fire just north of Lake Okeechobee was seen producing a large
amounts of smoke moving in all directions. The smoke show signs of being
moderate density but cloud cover over the region made it difficult to
fully distinguished.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Central America/Pacific Ocean/Texas…
A large area of light to moderate density smoke attributed to agricultural
burning activity, mixed with aerosols, covered much of southern and
eastern Mexico, Central America, adjacent waters of the Pacific Ocean,
the Bay of Campeche and the Gulf of Mexico. Moderate density smoke
was seen over eastern and southern Mexico as well as Eastern Gulf of
Mexico. The smoke was also seen extending north into the central U.S,
where it likely mingled with smoke produced from the fire activity
throughout the southern U.S. The smoke extended through Texas, Oklahoma,
parts of Kansas and Missouri, and along coast of the Gulf States.

DUST:
South-central U.S...
Light blowing dust was seen moving eastward across the central and
southwestern states such as New Mexico, Texas, western Oklahoma, and
Colorado. Parts of the dust likely originated from the White Sands in
New Mexico, where dust was seen moving across the state. The dust likely
extended further east across the central U.S, but cloud cover prevented
further analysis.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
