Subject: Product Outage/Anomaly: Update #3: NOAA-19 anomaly on the This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --Boundary_(ID_L5QlHZ+1idV4KQJDHzXvWg) Content-type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 8BIT *Update #3: *Upon further investigation by EUMETSAT and NOAA Engineering it was determined the MIU/MHS was under sampling the science data by a factor of 3 to 1. This under sampling was corrected at 19:27:58Z on November 17, 2017 (17/321) and the MHS is now producing correctly sampled science data. The root cause of the anomaly is still under investigation by Engineering. *Update #2: *On October 16, 2017 the MHS instrument was commanded to its operational mode and calibrated. It is now producing science data as of 17:31:08Z. (13:31 EDT). The instrument if fully recovered but the root cause of the anomaly is still under investigation by Engineering. Science data is being analyzed to ensure that it is within specifications and has returned to previous levels. Users will be notified if adjustments to the MHS instrument are further required for either operations or performance. *Update #1: *NOAA-19 MHS (Microwave Humidity Sounder) experienced an anomaly starting on 9 Oct 2017 (17/282) at ~0425 UTC. There were numerous alarms observed in real-time and it appeared that the MHS data was ‘stale’. EUMETSAT (European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) has investigated and confirmed the MHS is OFF. There is currently not believed to be anything wrong with the MIU (MHS Interface Unit) and that the problem lies solely with the MHS. The MHS will be attempted to be powered by NOAA on Oct 13, 2017 and reconfigured the following week for science channel data. The root cause remains under investigation by NOAA/NASA/EUMETSAT Engineering. * * *Topic*: NOAA-19 anomaly on the MHS/MIU *Date/Time Issued: *November 17, 2017 2125Z* Product(s) or Data Impacted:* MHS Sounding Products *Impacts on Users and Significance: *MHS sounding products are severely impacted ** *Date/Time of the Initial Impact:* October 09, 2017 0425Z *Date/Time of Expected End:* TBD* * ** *Length of the Outage: *TBD *Details/Specifics of Change: * At approximately 0425 UTC, three temperatures on the NOAA-19 MHS have dropped significantly, one below it's red limit. Update #3: Upon further investigation by EUMETSAT and NOAA Engineering it was determined the MIU/MHS was under sampling the science data by a factor of 3 to 1.  This under sampling was corrected at 19:27:58Z on November 17, 2017 (17/321) and the MHS is now producing correctly sampled science data.  The root cause of the anomaly is still under investigation by Engineering.

Update #2: On October 16, 2017 the MHS instrument was commanded to its operational mode and calibrated.

Update #1:  NOAA-19 MHS (Microwave Humidity Sounder) experienced an anomaly starting on 9 Oct 2017 (17/282) at ~0425 UTC.  There were numerous alarms observed in real-time and it appeared that the MHS data was ‘stale’. Topic: NOAA-19 anomaly on the MHS/MIU

Date/Time Issued: November 17, 2017 2125Z

Product(s) or Data Impacted:
  MHS Sounding Products

Impacts on Users and Significance: MHS sounding products are severely impacted

Date/Time of the Initial Impact: October 09, 2017 0425Z

Date/Time of Expected End: TBD

Length of the Outage: TBD

Details/Specifics of Change:

At approximately 0425 UTC, three temperatures on the NOAA-19 MHS have dropped significantly, one below it's red limit. The three temps that are cold are telemetered independent of instrument or MIU status. It is believed the MHS is safed and that the MIU is echoing the last packet it received prior to the MHS going safe. The anomaly is still being investigated.
