DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1500Z JULY 16, 2005

Alaska:
Extensive cloud cover limited the detection of smoke to the Kotzebue
Sound eastward to south of the Endicott Mountains.

Quebec/Ontario:
Numerous fires burning in southern Quebec and southeast Ontario were
producing small smoke plumes that were moving towards the northeast
this morning. Some residual smoke was detected in central Quebec.

Idaho:
Large fire burning near the Owyhee/Elmore county line generated smoke that
moved towards the east and was centered over Bingham county this morning.

Northwest Canada:
Plume of smoke stretched from the fires between Big Bear Lake and Big
Slave Lake east southeastward across the southern Northwest Territories.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
