DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1500Z JULY 17, 2005

Northwestern Canada:
Fires burning in Alaska and the Yukon and Northwest Territories have
produced an area of smoke that stretches from the Yukon/Northwest
Territories border southeastward into northern Saskatchewan.

Ontario and Quebec:
Smoke covers southern Ontario and southern Quebec. Thick smoke was over
southeastern Quebec, just north of Maine and approaching New Brunswick.

Rockies and Northern Plains:
Smoke from fires in Idaho and Nevada was moving rapidly to the east
and was detected over portions of south central South Dakota, northwest
Nebraska and southeast Wyoming this morning.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
