DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1700Z JULY 24, 2005

Northern Alaska/Russia:
A large area of smoke in various densities is spreading northward from
the Brooks range in Northern Alaska to the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas and
into the Arctic Ocean. The smoke has also moved westward into eastern
Russia. Due to cloud cover across most of central/southern Alaska the
full coverage of smoke cannot be defined.

Western U.S./Northern Central Plains:
A fire in Crook County Wyoming on the western border of South Dakota
is producing dense smoke across five states. The smoke spreads
across all of eastern Wyoming as far east as Casper then northward
into the counties of Powder River and Carter in southeastern Montana.
The moderate smoke then moves northeastward into southwest North Dakota
to near interstate 94 and eastward through all of western South Dakota.
The smoke now is moving southeastward into the Panhandle of Nebraska.
This is a relatively new fire in Wyoming.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
