DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0130Z JULY 27, 2005

Alaska/NW Canada:
A broad area of smoke 210 nmi wide stretches from the Yukon Territory
into the Chukchi Sea.  Smoke was also associated with new fires south
of Great Bear Lake.

Oregon:
Smoke from fires in Jackson, Josephine and Gillian counties was moving
south and west.

California:
Smoke from a fire in Fresno county was moving towards the west.

Idaho:
A fire on the Coconino/Garfield county line has produced a smoke plume
moving towards the northeast.  Another fire along the Lander/Humboldt
county line has resulted in a plume moving towards the east.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
