DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1600Z JULY 27, 2005

Alaska/NW Canada:
A broad area of thick smoke along a northwest to southeast axis stretches
from the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas across northern and central Alaska to
as far south as the Taylor Mountains and the Alaska Ranges. The smoke
stretches southeastward across northern and central sections of the
Yukon and Northwest Territories of Canada north of Great Bear Lake and
just south of Great Slave Lake. This area of smoke is less dense then
in Alaska. The smoke should begin to move into northern Alberta and
Saskatchewan and may have already done so, but it is not visible in GOES
10 morning imagery.

Oregon:
A fire burning in Jackson County, Oregon east of Medford is producing a
thin area of smoke. The smoke is moving across central Jackson County
northward into Douglas County to near the Uppqua National Forest.

Ontario:
A thin area of smoke stretching across Lake Nipigon in Ontario is moving
southeastward across Lake Superior. The smoke is currently reaching
into the extreme northeastern section of Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
