DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0200Z August 05, 2005

Alaska:
Smoke continues across central Alaska from the Yukon Territory to the
Norton Sound then southward along and between the Kaiyuh and Kuskokwim
Mountain ranges.

Southwest British Columbia:

Fire in southern Coast Mountains produced a plume that is extending 55
nmi to the east northeast.

Washington:
Late day fire in Kittitas County is producing a smoke plume that extended
30 nmi to the east.

Montana:
One fire in Mineral County has resulted in a smoke plume that extends
62 nmi to the northeast while another in Ravalli County produced a plume
that extended 87 nmi to the north northeast.

Minnesota:
Fires in Roseau County have produced smoke plumes that extended 126 nmi
to the southeast.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
