THRU 0015Z August 18, 2005

Alaska/Northwestern Canada:
Fires across Alaska and northern Yukon Territory continue to produce an
extensive area of dense smoke. Smoke spreads westward across the Bering
Sea then southward to the Aleutian Islands. Dense smoke also spreads
eastward and merges with an area of less dense smoke from fires south
of the Great Bear Lake. Thin smoke spreads southward to northwestern
British Columbia.

Ontario/Northern Great Lakes:
A fire at Lake Nipigon is spreading thin smoke to the Northern great
Lakes.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
