DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z August 23, 2005

Alaska/Northwestern Canada:
Alaskan fires have produced thick smoke that extends from northeastern
Alaska across the northern Yukon Territory and then into the Northwest
Territories (west of Great Bear Lake and over Great Slave Lake) before
dipping into extreme northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Oregon:
A narrow smoke plume extends from near the border of Douglas and Curry
Counties toward the southwest, eventually reaching the Pacific coast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
