DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 3, 2005

Idaho:
Numerous fires are burning over north central Idaho. However, smoke
detection is hindered by extensive cloud cover over the region. There
is likely locally dense smoke associated with these fires which would
extend into western Montana.

California:
A fire in or near Sequoia National Forest was producing a large
plume of mostly dense smoke extending to the northeast into southwest
Nevada. Additonal fires over western Mono and northeast Madera counties
were producing narrow smoke plumes extending to the northeast.

Texas and Arkansas:
A fire in northeast Texas to the northeast of Longview is producing a
moderately thick plume of smoke moving to the west and southwest. A fire
in Calhoun county in south central Arkansas is producing a moderately
thick plume of smoke extending west and reaching to the Oklahoma border.

Northern Plains:
Numerous small fires are seen over eastern North Dakota, northwest
Minnesota and southern Manitoba. A few of these produced small smoke
plumes less than 100 km in length.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
