DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z September 7, 2005

Northern Plains/Great Lakes/Quebec/Ontario:
The ongoing fires in Idaho and western Montana have produced a broad
area of smoke extending to the east. The smoke is seen from central
Montana eastward to the North Dakota border and this area is moderately
dense. The smoke becomes quite thin across North Dakota and northern
South Dakota into central Minnesota. The smoke area is then a bit more
dense as it extends from Wisconsin across the upper peninsula of Michigan
and into southeast Ontario and southwest Quebec.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
