DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z September 8, 2005

Northern Rockies/Northern Plains/Upper Midwest/Upper and Middle
Mississippi Valley/Ohio Valley:

A large area of dense smoke associated with the fires in Idaho is
spreading across a large section of the U.S. The smoke seen in morning
GOES-10 satellite imagery begins in southwest Montana (Beaverhead National
Forest) along the Idaho border. The smoke moves easterly across the
south/central sections of Montana (250 km wide) and into southwest North
Dakota and then from northwest to southeast in South Dakota and across
northeast Nebraska. The smoke then moves southeast over central/south
Iowa and northeast Missouri and into central/south Illinois/Indiana and
west Kentucky.

Idaho:
Fires in east central Idaho are producing thin smoke plumes moving north
across Idaho. Smoke is beginning to reach the Montana border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
