DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 12, 2005

Quebec:
There is a fire about 70 km east of the Quebec/Ontario border (at about
48N 78.5W). This fire is producing a dense smoke plume that extends
about 200 km toward the east.

California:
A fire near the border of Tuolumne and Mariposa Counties is producing
thick smoke spreading in several directions in both counties.

Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario:
A large area of haze appears to be mixed with some thin smoke that
is a remnant of the fires earlier this week in Idaho and Montana.
The smoke/haze mix covers much of Illinois, southeastern Wisconsin, and
Michigan and extends across Lake Huron even reaching into southeastern
Ontario.

Louisiana:
Two large fire complexes in Cameron County (and to a lesser extent smaller
fires in Vermilion County) are producing dense smoke plumes that extend
toward the northwest. The plumes from the Cameron County fires extend
into Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
