DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z September 25, 2005

Eastern U.S.:
No smoke was detected over the eastern portion of the nation today as
widespread cloudiness from the remnants of Hurricane Rita covered much
of the middle and lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast.

Western U.S.:
Only a few smoke plumes were detected this afternoon and evening across
the western U.S. These were mainly across central and northern California.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
