DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z September 29, 2005

Southern California:
Moderate to dense smoke from the Topanga fire along the Ventura/Los Angles
county line is moving west out to sea covering the Channel islands of
San Miguel, Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz. The smoke extends nearly 400km
and is on average 72km wide except at the far western extent where it
is 200km wide.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
