DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z September 30, 2005

California:
The Southern California fires of Topanga and Burbank have produced
dense smoke that fanned out NW to NE across most of Ventura and N Los
Angeles county and began to move into S and SE Kern county. However,
cloud cover has moved in an obscured the view of the fires and smoke.

A fire in C Tuolumne county near Yosemite Nat'l Park and the towns of
Strawberry and Pinecrest is producing thin to moderately dense smoke
that extends NE 75km to the CA/NV boarder and is on average 32km wide.

Idaho:
The Valley Road fire in eastern Elmore county is producing dense smoke
that extends NE 111km and is on average 21km wide.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
