DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z October 1, 2005

California:
The smoke associated with the Southern California fires of Topanga and
Burbank are much less distinct on satellite imagery this morning and
are very difficult to discern from the low clouds offshore. The most
identifiable and densest smoke plume extends from the Burbank fire 15
miles northwest to the vicinity of La Quinta in western Los Angeles
county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
