DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z October 3, 2005

Arizona:
The biggest smoke producing fire in the western US was located in the
Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in Yuma County of southwestern Arizona. Just
prior to sunset, the smoke extended approximately 100 miles to the north
of the fire.

California:
Satellite imagery showed a fire near the border of Napa and Solano
Counties of central California which appeared to form in the late
afternoon and produced a narrow smoke plume which quickly moved
eastward. The fires over southern California continue to lessen as each
day progresses. Today, only a small patch of possible smoke was noted
moving eastward across southwestern Los Angeles County.

Minnesota:
For the second consecutive day, a significant fire in the Superior
National Forest of northern Cook County in the arrowhead of northeastern
Minnesota near the Canadian border is responsible for a thick smoke
plume which spread northward into Ontario Province.

Pennsylvania:
A fire along the Somerset-Bedford County border of southwestern
Pennsylvania, just north of Cumberland, MD was emitting an area of
smoke that had moved northward across the southern and central portions
of Somerset County. This fire and associated smoke was also detected
yesterday.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
