DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 10015Z October 6, 2005

Idaho:
A couple fires in Clearwater and Idaho Counties resulted in thin smoke
plumes that stretched 27 nmi to the north.

Southwest U.S.:
A large blaze near the Mexico-California border produced a thick plume
of smoke that extended 115 nmi from east to west.  A new fire erupted in
Riverside County California generating thick smoke for 30 nmi stretching
from east to west.  Numerous fires in Gila and Coconino Counties Arizona
have produced thick smoke plumes that extended 110 nmi to the northeast.
A separate blaze in San Juan County New Mexico near the border with
Arizona produced a narrow plume that reached 27 nmi to the northeast.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
