DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z October 9, 2005

Northern and Central California:
Light to moderate smoke, or a smoke and haze mix is observed in Yuba,
Butte, Glenn, Colusa and Yolo Counties as a result of several fires in the
area. In Butte and Yuba Counties the smoke is moving northeastward while
in Glenn, Colusa and Yolo Counties the movement is primarily westward.

Southern California and Western Arizona:
Moderate blowing dust is seen in extreme southeastern California,
southwestern Arizona, and neighboring areas of Mexico. The dust is moving
toward the southeast.

Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma
Again tonight agricultural burns primarily in south-central and western
Kansas are producing light to moderate areas of smoke that move northward,
often detaching from the fires. In addition, fires in Castro and Lamb
Counties in northern Texas and a fire in Comanche County in southwestern
Oklahoma produced or are producing northward light to moderate smoke
plumes.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
