DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z October 12, 2005

California:
A cluster of fires was observed in the Sacramento Valley. These
fires produced thin smoke over Butte, Glenn, Colusa, Sutter and Yuba
counties. Fires producing  thin smoke were also visible over Washington,
NW Oregon and S British Columbia.

Arizona:
Dense smoke plumes extended to the east of fires in central and southern
Coconino County in northern Arizona.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
Numerous thin smoke plumes produced by agricultural burns were observed
over the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Gulf States.

 


Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
