DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z October 14, 2005

Lower Mississippi Valley:
Numerous ag fires in this region were producing sporadic smoke clouds
that were moving towards the south.

Florida:
A fire near the Santa Rosa/Okaloosa county border produced a smoke plume
that extended 85 nmi to the southwest.

Arizona:
Three fires in Coconino County produced smoke plumes that extended 86
nmi to the west.

Northern California:
Smoke plumes extended to the northeast from several fires burning in
Lassen, Shasta, and Plumas counties.

Oregon:
Fires in Yavapai, Curry, and Klamath counties generated smoke plumes
that extended to the northeast.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
