DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2245Z October 23, 2005

California:
Dense smoke from a fire along SR-88 SE of Omo Ranch in El Dorado county
fans out from N to NE. The upper level plume is more dense and extends
N 51km, while the lower level plume extends NE 33km.
Thin smoke from a fire near Beardsley Lake in NW Tuolumne county extends
NE 27km to the Alpine county line and is 11km wide.
Dense smoke from a fire near Comptonville in NE Yuba county extends NE
39km and is 10km wide.
Thin to moderately dense smoke from a fire near Kettle Rock NW of
Taylorsville in Plumas county fans out from N to E. The most dense portion
of the plume extends NE 149km though the extent in the N direction is
52km and E is 45km.
Convectively dense smoke from a fire just North of Lassen Volcanic Nat'l
Park in E Shasta county extends NNE 69km and is 20km wide.
Dense smoke from a fire SE of Drakesbad in NW Plumas county extends NNE
16km and is 15km wide.

Oregon:
Dense smoke from a fire near Red Hill in Wallowa county extends NE 51km
and is 12km wide.

Elsewhere across Oregon, multiple fires are burning across the Ochoco
and Malheur Nat'l forests in Central OR as well as Fremont and Winema
Nat'l forests in Klamath county. Occasional breaks in the dense cirrus
show smoke plumes, but end points and widths of plumes a difficult to
determine from GOES imagery.

Alabama:
Thin smoke from a fire near Chico in Talladega county extends SE 53km
and is 9km wide.

Louisiana:
Thin smoke from two very close burning fires near Brousville in Iberia
parish extends S 138km into the Gulf and is 19km wide.
Thin smoke from a fire near Slacks and Rosedale in Iberville parish
extends S 59km and is 8km.
Thin to moderate smoke from a fire near State Line in Washington Parish

most likely in the McFaddin N.W.R. extends S 110km and then bends SW
an additional 140km. The plume is thickest near the source and averages
18km wide.
Moderately dense to dense smoke from a fire near Port O'Conner in Calhoun
county extends SW 113km and is 20km wide.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
