DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2215Z December 11, 2005

Louisiana:
A fire near Pitkin in SE Vernon Parish is producing dense smoke that is
fanning out from due S to SE extending 101km and 104km, respectfully in
each direction.  It is, on average, 23km wide (wider the further from
the source).

Many fires are producing multiple thin plumes of smoke which cover much
of the Lower Missisippi River S of Baton Rouge in St.Martin, St.James,
Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
