DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z December 23, 2005

Southeastern US:
There are numerous fires, presumably agricultural burns, in Florida,
Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana and more than a dozen of
these fires are producing smoke plumes large enough to see in GOES
satellite imagery. The largest plume extends southward (over the
Gulf of Mexico) from a fire near the coast in Walton County, Florida.
Another dense plume extends southeastward from a fire in western
Washington County, Alabama.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
