DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z January 11, 2006

Florida:
A fire in western Wakulla county produced a moderately dense smoke
plume that extended to the northeast into Thomas county Georgia late
this afternoon. A smaller plume extended northeast from a fire in Baker
county into Charlton county Georgia. Numerous fires to the southeast
of Lake Okeechobee in Palm Beach county produced thin smoke that moved
across the lake early in the afternoon.

Louisiana:
Numerous fires over the southern part of the state (mainly east of
Vermillion and Lafayette parishes) were producing small (less than 50 km
long), narrow and thin smoke plumes that extended to the east. Some of
the larger plumes were over St Charles, Lafourche and St Bernard parishes.

New Mexico/Arizona:
A fire along the Roosevelt/Curry border in eastern New Mexico produced
a narrow plume of thin smoke that extended east into northern Bailey
count Texas this evening.

A blaze in southern Apache county near the Greenlee border had a small
plume that extended to the east into central Catron county New Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
