DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z January 31, 2006

Texas/Louisiana:
Several smoke producing fires were scattered across coastal counties of
southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. Brisk northerly winds were
blowing the smoke plumes more than 100 miles offshore in some cases. Some
of the larger smoke plumes were eminating from fires over Cameron Parish
of southwestern Louisiana, and Calhoun, Aransas, and Refugio Counties
of southeastern Texas.

Southern California:
A couple of fires were responsible for areas of locally moderately dense
smoke over southern California. One fire was located over north central
San Diego County in the vicinity of the Cleveland National Forest. The
smoke from this fire was moving in an ESE direction. The second fire
over northern Santa Barbara county was producing a smoke plume which
was moving in a SSE direction.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
