DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1900Z February 21, 2006

California:
An area of thin aerosol extended from coastal southern California near San
Diego westward into the Pacific about 325 km. It is not certain what the
source is – it may be smoke from fires that were observed last evening
in the Sacramento valley but is more likely haze from the Los Angeles
basin that has become entrained in an offshore cyclonic circulation.

Florida:
A fire in southeast Levy county is producing a thin plume of smoke that
extends east into western Marion county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
