DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z March 3, 2006

Florida and Mississippi:
Smoke plumes were moving towards the east from fires in Escambia, Santa
Rosa, Franklin, and Brevard counties in Florida and from fires in Wayne
and Jackson counties in Mississippi.

Tennessee Valley:
Smoke plumes were moving east from active blazes in Polk, Anderson and
Morgan counties in Tennessee as well as from fires in Magoffin, Johnson
and Whitley counties in Kentucky.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
Smoke was moving south from Claiborne, Lincoln counties, Louisiana,
and from Columbia and Hot Spring counties, Arkansas.

Rockies:
Smoke was moving north from Millard County, Utah, and Sedgwick County,
Colorado, but to the northwest from a fire in Montezuma County, Colorado.
Other smoke plumes were generated from blazes in Big Horn and Washakie
counties in Wyoming.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
