DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z MARCH 19, 2006

Tennessee/North Carolina/Virginia/South Carolina:
A 1600 acre controlled burn in Cocke County Tennessee is emitting a
dense area of smoke moving southeast across state borders.  The smoke
is moving across the Tennessee border into Madison, Buncombe, Henderson,
Polk and Rutherford counties in North Carolina and Greenville county in
South Carolina.
A fire on the border of Washington and Russell counties in Virginia is
emitting an area of moderately dense smoke moving east southeast into
north Johnson county in Tennessee and north Ashe county in North Carolina.
The smoke continued throughout the day to move farther east into the
counties of Gray, Alleghany and Smith in Virginia and Wilkes county in
North Carolina.
Smaller fires are producing thin plumes of smoke in the following counties
and in the above mentioned states.  Swain county in western North Carolina
and Currituck county in far eastern North Carolina.  In South Carolina,
the counties of Cherokee, Williamsburg, Horry and Dillon. In Tennessee
a thin smoke producing fire is burning in the county of Sequatchie.

State of Tamaulipas in Mexico:
Two fires in central Tamaulipas (near 24N/98W) are producing areas
of thick smoke moving north into the northern areas of the state.
The fires show up very bright in GOES 12 imagery.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
