DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z MARCH 22, 2006

Louisiana:
A long burning fire in the vicinity of Maude in St Tammany Parish was
producing a narrow but moderately dense smoke plume that extended over
100 miles southeast into the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas:
Scattered fire activity over the eastern half of Texas was producing
localized smoke plumes that were generally drifting on a southerly to
southwesterly direction this evening. The most significant smoke plume
was associated with a fire over eastern Aransas county. The plume
was drifting on a south and southwesterly direction over the extreme
western Gulf of Mexico and at sunset was seen approaching northeastern
Kenedy county. A second plume was associated with fire activity over
Hamilton county. At sunset there appeared to be a very thin smoke plume
originating from this fire to eastern Burnet and western Bell county.

Washington:
Any smoke associated with the fire activity from Walla Walla to Whitman
county was obscured by local cloud cover.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
