DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z APRIL 20, 2006.

Central Plains (OK/KS/MO):
Another day of significant fire activity over eastern Kansas and
northeastern Oklahoma has generated a large area of smoke over most
of the eastern third of Kansas this evening. The collective smoke
plume was lifting northeast to very near the Kansas City metro area and
extended from there into portions of northwest Missouri. Some of the
denser smoke plumes were associated with fire activity in the counties
of Greenwood/Lyon/Wabaunsee.

Montana:
An area of concentrated fire activity was detected over the counties of
Pondera/Teton/Cascade this evening which has produced an area of smoke
over the counties mentioned above. At sunset the smoke plume was seen
drifting southeast towards the Cascade/Meagher county area.

Oregon:
Widely scattered fire activity was producing extremely isolated smoke
plumes that were drifting north this evening. The most notable smoke
plume was associated with a fire over northwest Lake county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
