DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z MAY 12, 2006.

Gulf of Mexico/Florida:
A large fire on the Hendry-Palm Beach-Broward County border region
is producing a large dense smoke plume that is moving east to southeast
and out over the Atlantic. The smoke is likely affecting the Miami-Metro
area.
A relatively thin ban of moderately dense smoke extends from the Bay of
Campeche to the Florida Keys and across southern Florida to the Bahamas.
The smoke appears to be concentrated along and ahead a frontal system
which has pushed southward into the southern Gulf of Mexico.

Texas:
Fires in Tyler and Jasper counties are producing narrow plumes of thin
smoke that are moving south towards the far southeastern coast of Texas.

Dakotas/Southern Canada:
Early morning GOES West visible imagery shows an area of haze across
the region which may contain a bit of remnant smoke from yesterdays
widespread fires in that region.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
