DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0132Z May 19, 2006.

Canada/ Great Plains:
A large wild fire continues to burn in SW Quebec east of James
Bay. Dense smoke extended to the west and then northward over the bay. An
extensive area of smoke and haze stretched from the fires in Manitoba
and Saskatchewan to the Central Plains.

Southeastern States:
Scattered fires from SE Georgia to NE Texas produced plumes of moderately
dense smoke that drifted mostly toward the east. The largest fires with
dense smoke occurred in western Liberty County in Georgia and southern
Natchitoches Parish in Louisiana.

Northwestern States:
A fire in western Grays Harbor County in Washington produced a plume
of moderately dense smoke that drifted to the southeast over Thurston
County. Another fire in Lincoln County in NW Oregon produced a plume of
moderately dense smoke that extended to the northeast over W Clackamas
and Multnomah County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
